CSM2020 Conference - COVID-19

Posted: March 16, 2020

The CSM Executive and the CSM2020 Local Organizing Committee have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic since the end of January. We thank each of you for your support and patience as we navigate these unexplored waters. After careful consideration, we decided to cancel the conference in Guelph. All registrations received to date will be refunded in full. In addition, if you have an accommodation reservation, please cancel it. The Committee is studying the possibility of organizing the annual conference in 2021 in Guelph. More information will follow. Our decision to cancel the 2020 conference is in line with current public health recommendations for social isolation and aims to demonstrate our commitment to lead by example for our members and the community at large. We sincerely thank the members of the Local Organizing Committee for all their hard work to date. They laid the groundwork for a fantastic conference - and we will all benefit from it at our conference in 2021.

We are very pleased to invite you to the 70th Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists (CSM 2020) that will be held on the main campus of the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario from June 22-25, 2020. The conference theme this year is ‘Microbes for Life’ and will focus on microbes in health and agriculture. All three sections of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists traditional pillars will be equally represented, including Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Infection and Immunity, and Molecular Genetics and Cellular Microbiology. Our scientific program will highlight multiple aspects of microbiology, with symposium that include novel approaches to drug discovery, food microbiology and food safety, microbial -omics and related technologies, fungal biology and pathogens, phages, microbial transporters and stress responses, the microbiome and parasitic biology and infections.

The keynote opening lecture will be given by Dr. Dianne Newman from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech). Dr. Newman is a molecular microbiologist and Professor in the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering and the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences. Her research interests include bioenergetics and cell biology of metabolically diverse, genetically-tractable bacteria. Her work deals with electron-transfer reactions that are part of the metabolism of microorganisms. Additional presenters, including post-doctoral fellows and graduate students, will be selected among the submitted abstracts.

The Local Organizing Committee of CSM 2020 is excited to host a successful event that will showcase the breadth, diversity and excellence of the Canadian microbiology community. Not only will we have an exceptional scientific program but we will also make sure that your experience in Guelph is worthwhile! The City of Guelph is a vibrant community of over 130,000 with a lively downtown, abundant shopping opportunities and a dynamic cultural core. Surrounded by rolling hills of southwestern Ontario, Guelph is an hour's drive from Toronto and even closer to Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo. The city is characterized by many 19th-century limestone buildings including City Hall and the dramatic Church of Our Lady which dominates the city skyline. Specialty and craft shops, coffee houses, microbreweries nightclubs, restaurants featuring flavours of the world, and a nationally known bookstore housing a repertory cinema, café and bistro are all within walking or biking distance from the university.

We look forward to hosting CSM 2020 and to welcome you in Guelph in June. In the meantime, you can follow us on Twitter at @CSM2020_Guelph to get the latest news regarding CSM 70th Annual Conference.
